IT’S GO TIME

Sofia and Cillian trained for several days with Seo-Joon, using his new powers in short spurts, just like they’d planned. Seo-Joon recommended they take baby steps to help Cillian and his magic acclimate to the power now running through his veins, like stretching a muscle.

Sofia could tell Cillian deeply approved of this metaphor. He smirked and raised his eyebrows at Sofia as if to say, See? I told you.

Sofia could only blush and avert her gaze from him. God, when had she become such a schoolgirl? They were partners, and this mission was important. She needed to set aside her feelings and get a grip.

They started with Cillian meditating for a moment to access the particular note that indicated the presence of another Adept, then they bonded through the Torrent. For Sofia, this was easy as pie. She felt nothing very different, only a sense of extra weight to her magic, as if she were holding dumbbells. But it was manageable.

Cillian, however, had a much different experience.

“Bright lights,” he said, eyes screwed shut, once they had pulled him back from the Torrent. He winced. “It’s still overwhelming. I can’t see anything. Something’s wrong with me.”

“That’s all right,” Seo-Joon reassured him. “Your body and your senses are still adjusting. Let’s take a lunch break and then go again.”

They went to the cafeteria, and Sofia was happy to see the day’s special was a cold smoked salmon and asparagus salad. It was delicious, but she stopped to brush her teeth in their temporary quarters on the way back. Salmon breath in Cillian’s face was definitely not going to help his concentration. Then again, she could just have him shift into a big cat.

They returned to the training room to try again. This time, when they reached for the Torrent and Sofia summoned the Call spell, its shimmering music notes beckoned to her, too.

“Oh. I hear it! It’s working, Cillian!”

She used her free hand to grasp the spell. As soon as she connected with it, Cillian went taut beside her, his muscles straining.

“Stop!” Sofia cried out, letting go of the spell. Cillian relaxed again.

Seo-Joon, who had been watching from a safe distance, glanced at them both, brow furrowed. “What happened?”

“A bit of pain,” Cillian muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Only when we connected with the spell. It was like sensory overload.”

“Okay,” Seo-Joon said. “Let’s go again, then we’ll take a break.”

This pattern continued for several hours. Sometimes they took an actual break, with snacks and rest and relaxation. But most of the time, Seo-Joon encouraged more “productive” breaks such as Rogue training and sparring.

“It’s important to keep those other muscles active, too,” he pointed out.

By the end of the first day, Sofia’s entire body felt like Jell-O. Between the practice with Cillian’s new senses, followed by a particularly rough kickboxing session, then some magical sparring with Seo-Joon, she was exhausted and bone-weary.

She couldn’t imagine how Cillian was feeling, though. They’d done six rounds of sensory adaptation, and though he remained optimistic, she could see the way it wore on him.
